Daren Luke Kelly
Hi I'm Daren,
I started life in Surbiton, a small town near Kingston Upon Thames. My love for movement was sparked by dance, drama, gymnastics and competitive athletics in my teenage years. Combining these elements seemed natural to me pursuing a career in the burgeoning fitness industry and studying with the PEA, (The Physical Education Association of Great Britain). I landed my first job as a gym manager for the YMCA at the tender age of twenty! My interest in Weight training although physical, was far outweighed by the enriching mental attitude it help me develop. I entered several physique competitions and was a UK finalist two years running. Shortly thereafter I set up my own Personal Training business WellBeing, which focused on the individual as a whole, not just the physical aspect.
My fitness career went from strength to strength when offered the position of UK & international trainer for Les Mills Fitness. I became the first European to appear on video presenting the global phenomenon Body Pump, in Auckland, New Zealand. In 1997 I was introduced to Bodybalance, which incorporates Yoga styled elements. With its yoga inspired movements, I took to it instantly soon becoming a UK presenter. At this time I started to practice Yoga taking classes in London.
I also had a long standing passion for drama and undertook a BA in Acting and Theatre at the Stella Adler Academy Los Angeles. The syllabus included Kristin Linklater and Arthur Lessac exercises, which focussed on the centred breath and varying body energies, to stimulate the release of tension in the body. The shift and release of my own physical energy as a result of these exercises, was another learning experience that would directly influence my love of Yoga.
I continued to practise and found time spent on the mat was creatively rewarding, physically challenging and nourishing for both my body and my mind. Yoga began to effect my response to life situations; taking the edge off things, being less reactionary and endeavouring to steer my thoughts to a more balanced truthful head-space, that was clearer and calmer. Yoga was teaching me that less is more, to listen, be patient and to begin to understand how you can channel the conscious breath to wherever it was needed. I knew Yoga was something I wanted to practice for the rest of my life, but I also wanted to use my past teaching experience to share it with others in a way that made it accessible and relatable to everybody! Upon reading “Inside The Yoga Sutras”: The Study and Practice of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras by Jaganath Carrera, my heart and mind opened to the Philosophy of Yoga…an amazing thought provoking journey. I went on to study; Asana, Pranayama, anatomy and the study of the Yoga Sutras with Vidya Jacqueline Heisel, at the Frog Lotus Yoga Centre Suryalila, Spain. I’m qualified in Vinyasa Flow and Hatha Yoga Interdisciplinary.
My Teaching Philosophy
During class we will take a mindful journey of flowing asanas that uses the breath as the thread that binds the concentration to the body; When Yoga is practiced mindfully moment to moment we discover deeper moments of connectivity to self. As our practice flourishes we empower ourselves in mind and body, becoming more conscious of being and not doing, we begin learning to embrace feelings of quiet and calm surrender. What we in Yoga can be directly relatable to life.
My partner Johanna and I run our yoga classes side by side and also collaborate bringing you workshops and special events. johannalovisa.com
I look forward to meeting you on the mat.
